Help with Modular Stairs?
« on: December 07, 2010, 10:39:49 PM »
I think I'm missing something. I consider myself a relatively adept builder but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make stairs that aren't just one long flight. Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong? It makes it really difficult to a) find a good spot for stairs and b) just looks plain ugly. Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure what you mean by one long flight.  Are you wanting to break them in the middle or something?  There's no way to do that.  If you're putting stairs between two floors, they have to be just one piece.

They definitely have to be one long piece? I was just browsing around a few houses I had gotten from the exchange and saw at least one that contained stairs that were broken up in the middle (which is what got me confused)... maybe the second floor is just extra high in that case?

It might been because of the use of a mod.  Or the builder is extremely talented and knows how to put half level floors for the stairs.  But if you're just a regular builder and want stairs to go from the ground floor to the second floor, they have to be a straight one piece stair.

Oh well, definitely not worth the use of a mod IMO. Thanks for the help!

Edit: Not worth the use of a mod because I personally am not talented enough at building to know how to put half level floors for the stairs!

I think it's possible to do it without a mod by using 'constrainfloorelevation false' or small blocks of foundation, but both methods would be a bit fiddly and in no way guaranteed to work. Good luck  :P.

If you Google "split staircase on Sims 3" there are a lot of results.  There is also quite a few different videos on YouTube.  I find watching videos are easier to learn from.  Every tutorial that I have seen has used 'constrainfloorelevation false'.  I personally have no luck with that cheat, I just can not understand it.  :)

Do you mean stairs like this? I made them in my legacy family, the Larsons. Without using cheats.

It looks like a foundation placed on the existing floor.  I read about it somewhere (either here or on theSim3.com ... or even somewhere in the game Lessons file)

I think its called a mansion staircase or something like that. There is a tutorial on the sims 3 website.

It requires cheat codes though. There my be a way to do it with out cheats though, but I haven't found it yet. I hope this helps.

I manage to do this without cheats, and pretty quickly, and I don't consider myself to be talented builder. It might be a problem to built this in already built home.

First, I lower the terrain in about half level of walls, placed walls and floor tiles on top. Then, at the edge of lower part I put another wall and floor tiles. Then connected those 2 with stairs:

Once you put floor tiles you can erase walls and flatten the terrain back, I did that and add a foundation part next to it and got this:

Thank you, Anushka.  That made it very clear and certainly easy to do.
