Server Update and Spell Check
« on: April 26, 2011, 02:44:58 PM »
In order to install some other features, I had to update the Server (which caused several problems including a temporary outage of the guide). When updating, our new version of PHP does not come with pspell installed by default, which is required for the forum's spell checker. I looked into and found the solution, but I don't want to risk further problems for this. All modern browsers have spell checkers, aside from Internet Explorer. I'm sure they'll fix that eventually - if they didn't already.

So I'm not planning to go through that entire process of tinkering with the server for that one browser. If you use IE and want spell check functionality, look to this program: IeSpell which adds the ability to spell-check to the browser's right-click menu. This will give you a fraction of the spell-check functionality you'd have if you switched to Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. The program is free, and 100% safe.

I just installed a new spell checker. It has a couple hundred thousand words, so we should be covered ;) This is a little different but it didn't require me to reconfigure php on the server in order to get it working, thus no chance for me to break something! Just be careful what corrections you choose, but I guess that's always how it goes. It should be helpful enough for people who have trouble.

Thank you very much for your hard work, Carl. I am loving the new Spell Checker! It'll surely help when writing stories. Thank you, again. :)
Well, that's your opinion, isn't it? And I'm not about to waste my time trying to change it. - Lady GaGa

I just wanted to comment that the Spell Check does not seem to recognize certain contractions. (Like I'm or I'd)

That's right - and, a minor error, either "Recommend" isn't listed in it's dictionary, or I majorly misspelt it. I doubt the latter, however.

I guess the trouble is that cant, id, and wont are all words. My Firefox spell checker doesn't pick them up either. It's not going to be smart like Microsoft Word at determining what you're trying to say. I did go in and add all those words but the only thing that seems to be fixed is recommend.  :P

Big thanks from me Carl.
The ieSpell option was always inserting the correct word in the middle of the word I was trying to correct.  Sometimes my brain is faster than my fingers so I constantly make mistakes ::).

Thanks Carl, it's so good to have the spellcheck back!  Even better, the update seems to have fixed the annoying scrolling problem I used to have for longer posts. Thanks again!
